BEI partners with Energy Vault on Reid Gardner BESS

A new utility-scale energy project in the Moapa Valley in Clark County, Nevada, has been completed. BEI recently partnered with Energy Vault on the construction of a battery energy storage system (BESS) on the site of the old Reid Gardner Power Generating Station, a coal-burning plant that was demolished in 2019.

The project was commissioned by utility company, NV Energy, to meet surging energy demands in the region. The new 220 MW Reid Gardner facility will temporarily store energy from the grid in a complex of 208 lithium iron phosphate battery cells during periods of low energy usage. The batteries will then feed the stored energy back onto the grid during peak demand hours. The plant’s original electrical substation was preserved for use in NV Energy’s transmission system.

Fulfilling a growing need

Energy storage has become a key enabler of renewable energy generation. The global BESS market is expected to reach between $120 billion and $150 billion by 2030—more than double the size it is today, and BESS capacity will quintuple.

“BEI has become one of the leading players in BESS engineering and construction, and we’re seeing strong demand for our services in this area. Projects like Reid Gardner draw on our firm’s proven strengths and areas of expertise—civil engineering for the BESS foundation and then the involvement of our substation and BESS teams,” explains Jerry Zampino, General Manager – BESS, BEI Construction. “We continue to partner with Energy Vault on projects of this nature. It’s proving to be a successful collaboration as we work together to make a significant contribution to energy resources in the West.”
